The term “rainy season” doesn’t sound very romantic, does it? And yet, “green season in Costa Rica” feels like it’s nudging into the realm of euphemism – of an invented term designed to gloss over the wet realities of Costa Rica’s rainiest months. But is that really the truth?

Let’s start by comparing apples to apples: “snow, ice, and interminable gray sky season” isn’t exactly a cheery alternative name for “winter,” either. So yes, we’ll start with this: Costa Rica’s rainy season is rainy, in the same way that U.S., Canadian, and most European winters are cold and gray.

But here’s the difference: Generally speaking, most people dread the onset of winter chill. By contrast, Costa Rica welcomes the rain – and looks forward to it, even! Because here, the Costa Rica rainy season is something to celebrate. Something we love. Something you might just love, too.

Here’s why:

1. It Doesn’t Rain as Much as You Think

Full disclaimer: In much of Costa Rica, “wet” doesn’t even begin to describe the rainy season. But here at Hacienda Pinilla, we’re blessed with a sunnier, more arid climate, thanks to our provincial home of Guanacaste, Costa Rica’s driest province.

To put it into day-to-day terms, the green season usually dawns as sunny as any other day of the year, transitions to a short (1-3 hour) rain shower in the afternoon, and clears in plenty of time for a spectacular, cloud-dappled sunset.

2. Wait, HOW Many Shades of Green Are There?

Not to overstate the obvious, but the green season is named for its hue: green. Except, in Costa Rica, the shade is a rainbow unto itself: apple, jade, beryl, kelly, moss, sage, chartreuse, verdigris, and, well, about a hundred more! are all on beautiful display.

And they all appear distinctly different. The first time you see it (and every subsequent time you really look) it’s startling: Costa Rica’s all-green landscapes are far from monotone; they’re a kaleidoscope of emerald epiphytes and olive mosses, pine-colored grasses and lime-green trees. And oh, is it a sight to see! Ready your cameras.

3. The Deals Can Be Incredible

One of the best secrets of the green season in Costa Rica? You can get serious value for your money, not only in listed prices but on extras and inclusions.

First things first: If you love a great deal, then you’ll appreciate the bottom line during green season. Not only are these the lowest prices of the year, but they’re objectively low – often, up to 70% off peak-season and holiday-season prices. That means you can level-up your luxury or add on more experiences, without upping your budget.

What’s more, you’ll find that green season rentals often add a variety of perks. From tours and private chefs to airport transportation and spa services, if you peruse your options (or just ask us, if you need a shortcut!), you’ll find that there are plenty of extras to be had.

When the rains begin, Hacienda Pinilla (and Tamarindo, to some extent) feel a bit more like small towns. Incredibly well-equipped, often luxurious small towns, but small (or smaller) towns, nonetheless!

Almost overnight, the beaches are less crowded. It’s easier to snag a primetime seat at a beloved café. There’s never any competition for your favorite beach spot, or the best surfing wave, or that perfectly shaded reading bench.

Indeed, from May through November, Hacienda Pinilla quiets down. Often, you’ll look around and feel like it’s a best-kept secret known only to you and the community’s lucky residents. It’s a different side of Hacienda Pinilla, one known only to a select few – to those of us who buck the trend and visit during the green season in Costa Rica.

5. Costa Rica Bursts with Life

Costa Rica’s rainy season brings fresh life. The cracked ground becomes pliant. Fresh buds, blooms, and leaves erupt. Heliconia, tropical flowers, orchids and hundreds of other colorful blossoms spring to action.

And it’s not just the plant life, either: The green season welcomes baby animals, so it’s not uncommon to spot tiny sloths clinging to their mothers, or young monkeys learning to swing in the trees. Not to mention, olive ridley turtle arribadas (mass nesting) get into full swing between July and December.

In fact, there’s a whole host of activities that are better during the green season. They include:

• Whale-Watching: Did you know that the best months for whale-watching in Costa Rica are August and September? That’s right – towards the tail-end of the green season, many coastal areas witness near-daily sightings, thus increasing your chances of success.
• Great Surfing: As the rivers swell and climatic conditions pick up, the Tamarindo area’s waves often crest overhead. For serious surfers, this can be the absolute best time of year, so don’t miss it!
• Sea Turtle Nesting: During the green season in Costa Rica, olive ridley turtles are nesting at both Santa Rosa National Park and Ostional Wildlife Refuge – north and south of Hacienda Pinilla, respectively. If you can, visit Ostional during an arribada (mass nesting event) and, luck be with you, you could spot hundreds of turtles, both nesting and hatching!
• Sport Fishing: Tales of Tamarindo’s legendary sport fishing get even taller during the rainy season months, when large marlin (especially, blue and striped marlin) are in town. You’ll also have a chance to hook large specimens of yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, and other prized (and tasty) catches.
• Sunsets: While you may not come just for the sunset, Costa Rica’s rainy season sunsets are truly spectacular! There’s something about the climate just after a shower, when the pressure is high and the skies are spotted with puffy clouds… there’s nothing like it!

6. And When It Does Rain, Wow!

You know how you felt as a kid, when you awoke to a window framing falling snow? Live the excitement and wonder again – and again and again and again – every time Mother Nature blesses Hacienda Pinilla with an aguacero, or torrential downpour.

True talk: Rain in the U.S. and Canada simply can’t compare; here, thick sheets of rain sluice the sky; puddles appear in seconds; and the sound is deafening. We can’t think of a cozier setting or more apropos moment for a light blanket, a cup of tea/coffee/cocoa, and a good book.

We operate a variety of Tamarindo fishing boats, each well-equipped and ideal for various types of sportfishing excursions. Our captains and crew are highly experienced, both in navigating the Pacific and in finding the right areas to throw in your line. Volcano Hiking & Waterfall Swimming at Rincón de la Vieja

It’s no secret (not at all) that Rincón de la Vieja is one of our favorite national parks. It’s the embodiment of everything it means to be both cool and steamy (literally), with some serious flavor, spirit, and myth all rolled into one. And, we know – we promised ways to cool off, not ways to steam up!

At the heart of Rincón de la Vieja National Park is its eponymous, still-active (sometimes very active) volcano that fuels (again, literally) many of the park’s most astonishing attractions: boiling mud pots and steamy volcanic fumaroles, hot springs (most, too hot for humans) and mini-volcanos, plus waterfalls and scrubby moonscape, lush rainforest and other natural wonders.

Our Rincón de la Vieja National Park Tour options are varied, allowing you to choose the adventure that’s right for you: But if you want to cool off this summer, then we have to recommend a combination hike along the Las Pailas trail (home to startling volcanic sights), followed by a waterfall swim. Or river rafting. Or whatever sounds best to you.

Experienced diver? Or, never strapped on an oxygen tank? We got you! Our snuba and scuba excursions are available to both certified and non-certified divers, making this an underwater exploratory adventure suitable for anyone who’s ever hoped to be part of Ariel’s world. Or, you know – just to cool off in the Pacific’s watery depths.

Certified divers can tank-up for the Catalina Islands for a guided scuba dive at one of Costa Rica’s best dive sites: an underwater wonderland of incredible marine life, including giant manta rays with jaw-dropping wingspans up to 20 feet. If it’s the right season, bring your underwater camera because this is a sight for forever memories! Non-certified divers will begin with scuba training before heading out into the deep blue.

Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP)

Whatssssssup? SUP, that’s what! Truth be told, stand-up paddle boarding is one of our favorite full-body challenges (and a great way to spend your day) and a perfect way to cool down whenever the mood strikes; the ocean is a toe away, so jump on in!

If you’ve never practiced the fine art – and fine balance – of stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), then know that it’s one of the world’s best workouts, offering a full-body challenge that engages legs, core and shoulders, with some pinch-hitting from arm coordination. Need a break? Want to relax? Fancy some sightseeing? Sit down on your board, dip your feet into the sea, and enjoy.

Think of it as part balancing, part kayaking, part surfing – and all fun. During a two-hour lesson, we’ll ferry you to one of the calmest and most beautiful beaches near Hacienda Pinilla, where you can get up, get steady, and get paddling, even if it’s your first time on SUP. It is a par-72 course that measures 7,200 yards from the championship tees. The course is known for its lush vegetation, challenging layout, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, as well as a smart design that incorporates natural obstacles such as lakes and streams, adding to the course’s aesthetic appeal and gameplay challenges.

2. Reserva Conchal Golf Course

Set within breathtaking tropical dry forest natural surroundings, Reserva Conchal’s golf course was designed by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II. This 18-hole championship course offers a challenging and enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels. The course spans over 7,200 yards and is known for its exceptional design and strategic layout, which features wide fairways, challenging bunkers, and undulating greens that require strategic play.

3. The Ocean Course at Peninsula Papagayo (Private Course)

There’s nothing like the sudden stop-realize-dread combo to make you wonder whether you’ve forgotten any ultra-essential things to bring to Costa Rica: Panic ensues. You pull out your phone and start scouring the internet. All is lost.

Only, it’s not. Here’s the truest truth: If it’s essential to Costa Rica, we have it here. Because we need it, too! So, don’t panic; almost anything forgotten can be purchased locally. That said, if you’re seeing this any time before you’re sitting at your airplane gate, then do have a read. Because we’ve been there, done that. And we’ve learned what things to pack for Costa Rica.

Things to Bring to Costa Rica (Year-Round)

There are some things you’ll need year-round, no matter the weather. These are those things.

For the sake of brevity, we’ll leave out the standard packing recommendations. In other words, we won’t recommend you pack shirts or a bathing suit; we’ll assume they’re a given! What we are including are all those other things to bring to Costa Rica – the ones you may not realize you need. Off we go!

✅ Windbreaker or Lightweight Jacket

If you’re going anywhere but the beach – and by that, we mean even a rainforest hike – then we’d recommend packing a long-sleeved, lightweight something. The Costa Rica rule of thumb: As the altitude climbs, temperatures drop. What’s more, even getting wet or sweaty can lead to shivers (thanks to tropical breezes and humidity, which hits different here!).

✅ Dressy Clothing

No, we’re not talking black-tie formal but we do suggest you pack at least an outfit or two for a night on the town. While you won’t find any formal fine dining in Costa Rica, you will find that many people choose to swap out their swimsuit and flip-flops for something a little more formal for an evening out.

✅ Sneakers or Hiking Boots

If you plan to hike anywhere in Costa Rica, pack good footwear. This not only assures you’ll stay comfortable on a long hike – some of the heftier adventures have you on the trail for 4+ hours – but will help protect you from thorny plants, insects, snakes, and other bothers.

✅ Water Shoes

If you’ll be at the beach or plan to hike waterfalls, you may want to consider packing secure, water-safe shoes to help you navigate rocky beaches and rivers.

✅ Waterproof Day Pack or Dry Pack

Again, if you plan to do a little adventuring in Costa Rica, then a waterproof bag (of some sort) should be on your list of things to pack for Costa Rica. If you’re going on a whitewater rafting trip, waterfall rappelling, or some other definitely-going-to-be-wet day trip, then a dry pack is recommended for your phone, wallet, camera, etc.; if you’re just hiking the rainforest, a waterproof day pack will probably cut it.

✅ Long Pants

Speaking of hikes, again – if you’re planning to do some trail hiking, then you should pack at least one pair of comfortable pants as an additional layer of protection from flora and fauna.

✅ Hat, Sun Visor, Etc.

Even if it’s not your everyday style, we’d recommend packing a hat in your bag. Whether it’s a sun hat, a baseball cap, a sun visor, or any other variety, a hat will help keep your head and face protected from the Costa Rican sun. At just 9º north of the equator, it’s strong down here!

✅ Your Favorite Toiletries

Luxury Villas Hacienda Pinilla supplies upscale toiletries (hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc.) at your vacation home. That said, if you require specific products, have sensitive skin, or simply don’t want to get by without your favorites, then these are definitely things to bring to Costa Rica, as many products can be hard (or impossible) to source locally.

✅ Reef-Safe Sunblock

We know that “sunblock,” generally, is a given. That said, please consider packing only high-factor, reef-safe sunblock, as these products do not contain ingredients that contribute to coral bleaching.

✅ Insect Repellent

It’s a jungle out there – literally! Depending on your location, you could encounter little to no biting insects. But in the event that you run into them (and, worse, they into you!), it’s much, much better to be prepared.

✅ Water Bottle

Costa Rica’s tap water is potable (except in very, very rural areas where signs state otherwise) and you’ll find ample fill-up stations in many national parks, beaches, and other points throughout the country. Do Mother Nature a favor and pack a refillable bottle!

✅ Travel Surge Protector

We always recommend carrying a travel surge protector for connecting electronics and charging phones. Note that modern Costa Rican construction uses three-pronged Type-B plugs (similar to what you’d find in the U.S.); the standard voltage is 120 V.

✅ Specialty Gear (ex. Birdwatching)

If you have special interests, such as wildlife or birdwatching, then good binoculars, field guides, and other gear should be on your list of things to bring to Costa Rica.

Additional Things to Pack for Costa Rica (Dry Season)

In addition to the above list, there are a few additional packing items you may want to consider, if you’re traveling to Costa Rica during the dry season (roughly, December-April).

Because, while you probably won’t encounter much rain – unless you’re adding Arenal, the Caribbean, or the rainforest into your travel mix – Costa Rican weather still encourages a few extra provisions.

✅ Lightweight Clothing

If you’re planning on doing anything more than lounging at the beach or pool, you’ll appreciate having lightweight, natural-fiber clothing in your suitcase. If you sweat a lot, you may want to consider adding some quick-dry options to the mix.

✅ Sunblock

No, seriously. We know we already have this on our list above, but we cannot emphasize this enough: Wear sunblock! We are closer to the equator and, therefore, closer to the sun. Pack water-resistant sunblock for land activities and reef-proof sunscreen for ocean adventures.

Additional Things to Bring to Costa Rica (Rainy Season)

Honestly, there’s not much additional to pack for a trip during the rainy season. For the most part, you’ll have lightweight, often beach-ready clothes (ones that can get wet) already packed, so it’s merely a matter of adding a few additional things to pack for Costa Rica.

✅ Rain Jacket

You will get caught in a rainstorm. (It’s part of the fun and experience!) Be prepared and pack a lightweight rain jacket that’ll keep you dry without heating you up. (The humidity is real.)

✅ Umbrella

For reasons already covered, we’d recommend carrying a small umbrella in your day pack, purse, or other bag.

✅ Quick-Dry, Water-Wicking Socks

It’s almost inevitable that your feet will get wet during the rainy season. Fast-drying, water-wicking socks will make your life better on rainy-season hikes and other adventures.

✅ Waterproof Phone Case

Look, we know – we keep talking about water, water, water. But until you’ve found yourself in the middle of a Costa Rican rainstorm, it’s easy to underestimate just how much rain can fall here. Do yourself a favor and protect your smartphone (and any other electronics you’ll carry with you) with a waterproof case and/or dry bag (see above).

If you’re squeezing in some last-minute plans for your 2023 spring break and are wondering what things to bring to Costa Rica, what you should do, and where you should say, then this one’s for you!

Things to Bring to Costa Rica for Spring Break

There are so many packing lists online, you need only search for things to bring to Costa Rica or things to pack for Costa Rica and you’ll have nearly a complete list. That said, here are a few things you really don’t want to forget:

• Reef-Safe Sunblock: The Costa Rican sun is strong! Bring a strong, water-resistant, ocean-safe sunblock and remember to re-apply – often! You may also want to bring extra sun protection, like 50 SPF clothing (ex. rash guards) and hats.
• Variety of Bug Repellent: You may worry that the tropics will eat you alive but the truth is, bugs are usually only a problem in certain environments (think: certain areas of the rainforest) or at dusk/dawn. We recommend bringing a light, natural repellent for everyday use and then packing an additional, more robust variety for some of your more nature-forward adventures.
• Extra Camera Batteries & Memory Cards: Running out of battery power can be catastrophic on vacation! And, while you can buy memory cards locally, it’s easier to just pack an extra (or two).
• Portable Battery Charger: Roaming, bright sunlight, and even 4g connections can do a number on your phone’s battery life. Do yourself a solid and bring a backup battery pack, to ensure you’re always up and running (especially if you use your phone as your camera!).
• Rain Gear (seasonal): If you’ll be here during any months that could possibly see rain (roughly, May through December here in Tamarindo), then we’d recommend packing some rain gear: quick-dry pants, a backpack cover, and a rain slicker, at a minimum. This way, Mother Nature can never rain on your parade.

Other than that, the things to bring to Costa Rica are the things to bring almost anywhere: clothes, hygiene products, medical necessities, makeup, and more. If you need access to specific products – even products that are sold “literally everywhere” back home – then bring them. What is widely available here may not be the same as what’s widely available back home.

But if you’re wondering whether it’s easy to stock up on shampoo and conditioner, or liquid hand soap, or even the above-mentioned sunscreen or repellent here, then the answer is yes. They may be sold at a bit of a premium, since they’re imported, but they are available. Crisis, averted!

How to Celebrate Costa Rica New Year’s

When it comes to New Year’s, we’re really talking about New Year’s Eve in Costa Rica. That’s when and how we celebrate.

Here are the four elements you need to ring in 2023, Costa Rica style!

Element #1: Fire Up the BBQ

There’s nothing more Costa Rican than a barbecued feast on New Year’s Eve. Whether it’s traditional coffee wood, charcoal, or whatever’s on hand, Costa Rican families and friends light a flame and grab their favorite grill goodies – sausage/chorizo, chicken, beef, veggies, hotdogs, hamburgers, corn tortillas, etc. – to roast and toast to the coming year.

Element #2: Prep for a Party

Costa Rica does New Year’s two ways – and either is wholly acceptable and appropriate (and enjoyable). It’s a holiday meant for fun, so you do you!

Traditionally, New Year’s Eve was a family get-together: a (somewhat) quiet affair with your nearest and dearest, paired with plenty of music, great barbecue food, and drink. Entertain, converse, and await the coming of the new year. As we ring in 2023, many families will continue to celebrate in this exact way.

The second, and ever more popular way to spend New Year’s Eve is partying it up, whatever that means for you. For many Costa Ricans, this means hosting a big party at home; it’s similar to the family gathering described above, only bigger and louder and more festive. Add lots and lots of music, ice-cold beers, and (legal) fireworks, and you’re ready to go.

Of course, there is a third option: New Year’s Eve parties. They used to be so uncommon as to be almost impossible to find, but today – and especially in nearby Tamarindo – if you want to go out on NYE, there’s a way and a place. (Ask us. We’re still waiting on all the local events to be announced!)

Element #3: Enjoy the Fireworks!

Fireworks are integral to Costa Rica’s New Year’s Eve celebration. And we love it!

Traditionally, Costa Ricans purchased their own fireworks – the smaller, safer, DIY variety bought at a roadside stand and lit in your backyard. Today, they’re still incredibly popular. And they’ve increased in complexity; some backyards put on a serious show! If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot someone else’s fireworks from your own backyard.

If you want an absolute surety in the fireworks department, then know that many commercial establishments and public places put on their own fireworks shows. Near Hacienda Pinilla and around Tamarindo, you’ll find some of the best shows right on the beach: Find a place before midnight, dig your toes into the sand, and watch as the fire dancers come to life and fireworks light the sky. It’s an incredible sight, especially reflected over the Pacific. You’re going to love it!

Element #4: Indulge in a Few Costa Rica New Year’s Traditions

Latin America has many New Year’s customs and traditions, many built around wishes for luck, happiness, finances, and joy for the year to come. Here are a few of our favorites:

• 12 Grapes: Grapes are a very traditional New Year’s treat in Costa Rica. To start, they’re imported and therefore more expensive than tropical fruits, making them a holiday treat. More than that, though, many Costa Ricans eat 12 grapes at New Year’s to symbolize 12 wishes and/or 12 months of prosperity for the year to come.
• The Santa Lucía Flower: Many Costa Ricans will place a Santa Lucía flower (often, dried) in their wallets on January 1, to carry throughout the year and bring financial success.
• Coordinate Your Underwear: Believe it or not, an old wives’ tale in Costa Rica says that the color of your underwear on NYE can influence your new year. Wear red to spark romance; choose green to bring financial success; and go for yellow to attract overall good luck!
• Grab Your Suitcase: Want to ensure new travels in the new year? Grab your empty suitcase and walk it around the block (or thereabouts) to guarantee many new travels for the next year.

And with that, you’re ready to practice saying ¡Feliz año nuevo! It’s pronounced (more or less) like feh-leez ahn-yo new-ay-voh and means “Happy New Year!” If you write it out, be sure to include the ñ in año, as otherwise, it is a somewhat vulgar (albeit in a humorous way) phrase!

Resolve to Travel: Where to Stay in 2023

If travel is on your New Year’s resolution menu, then grab your suitcase, don your yellow underwear, and grab your agenda or planner! Because, while New Year’s traditions can represent a fun step in the right direction, what you really need is an intention followed by serious planning.

Volcano Watching & Waterfalls: Rincón de la Vieja National Park

It’s no secret (not at all) that Rincón de la Vieja is one of our favorite national parks. It’s the embodiment of everything it means to be both cool and steamy (literally), with some serious flavor, spirit, and myth all rolled into one.

Named for a long-ago princess of legend, Rincón de la Vieja National Park is home to a still-active (sometimes very active) volcano that fuels (again, literally) many of the park’s most astonishing attractions: boiling mud pots and steamy volcanic fumaroles, hot springs (most, too hot for humans) and mini-volcanos, plus waterfalls, scrubby moonscape, lush rainforest, and other natural wonders.

Awe-Inspiring Nature: Turtle Nesting & Hatching

Costa Rica is famously home to some of the world’s most important turtle-nesting beaches, including two right here, near Hacienda Pinilla!

On the shores of our North Pacific coast, both Ostional Wildlife Refuge and Playa Grande (within Las Baulas National Marine Park) welcome droves of nesting mothers: During Ostional’s jaw-dropping arribadas, or mass-nesting events, tens of thousands of olive ridley turtles (about the size of your carry-on luggage!) can lumber onto the sands at once. At Playa Grande, you’ll find far fewer numbers but just as impressive a sight, as massive (and endangered) leatherback sea turtles nest along Playa Grande.
