This one’s our forte, obviously! Hacienda Pinilla offers a championship golf course located just south of Tamarindo, along Playa Avellanas. The course was designed by Mike Young and opened in 1996. It is a par-72 course that measures 7,200 yards from the championship tees. The course is known for its lush vegetation, challenging layout, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, as well as a smart design that incorporates natural obstacles such as lakes and streams, adding to the course’s aesthetic appeal and gameplay challenges.
2. Reserva Conchal Golf Course
Set within breathtaking tropical dry forest natural surroundings, Reserva Conchal’s golf course was designed by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II. This 18-hole championship course offers a challenging and enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels. The course spans over 7,200 yards and is known for its exceptional design and strategic layout, which features wide fairways, challenging bunkers, and undulating greens that require strategic play.
3. The Ocean Course at Peninsula Papagayo (Private Course)
You’ll likely find plenty of information about the famed Ocean Course at Peninsula Papagayo. While it was once a public course, as of 2021, this course has gone private and is open only to Peninsula Papagayo community members.
The northernmost choice for golf in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, the Peninsula Papagayo Golf Course was designed by renowned golf course architect Arnold Palmer. The 18-hole championship course offers a challenging and scenic golfing experience, with panoramic vistas of sandy coastline, turquoise waters, and surrounding natural landscapes. The course spans over 7,080 yards and features a unique design that incorporates the natural beauty of the Papagayo Peninsula.

These picturesque, world-class links have earned an environmental designation as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, thanks to significant efforts to preserve the region’s ecological balance. As you swing and putt, keep an eye out for all the wildlife that make their home here, including coyotes and deer, birds and small wildcats.
Be warned that the course can get wild: there are a few not-so-urban legends that tell of surprise green visits from local crocodiles. How’s that for an upgrade to your standard sand trap?
