The Hacienda Pinilla, Guanacaste Golf Course

The only thing better than oceanfront links than an oceanfront, Pacific-view, 18-hole golf course that’s also ecologically certified.
Welcome to Hacienda Pinilla’s championship golf course is designed by respected architect Mike Young, who created a beautiful and tropical golf course that meanders through forests and over greens, up hills and along sandy Pacific coastline. The result are greens and traps that follow the land’s natural curvature and preserves ecological balance, thus earning it the environmental designation of Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary that preserves ecological balance.
At Hacienda Pinilla, Guanacaste, the course runs 7,200 yard of par-72 play, promising hours of challenge and excitement. As you swing and putt, keep an eye out for all the wildlife that make their home here, including coyotes and deer, birds and small wildcats. Be warned that the course can get wild: there are a few not-so-urban legends that tell of surprise green visits from local crocodiles. Do you dare?
Prices:
- November-March: $150 (18 holes) / $75 (9 holes)
- April-October: $125 (18 holes) / $65 (9 holes)
- Twilight (after 1 p.m.): $90
- Super Twilight (after 3 p.m.): $75

Hacienda Pinilla, Guanacaste Beaches

Did you know that Pinilla Costa Rica is located in a region known as Costa Rica’s Gold Coast, so named for the sun-kissed sand and glorious sapphire sea that hugs its shoreline?
And when you stay with us, you have access to three of the most beautiful – and most exciting! – Gold Coast beaches: pristine and protected slices of paradise for surfers, swimmers, snorkelers, and everyone in between. Introducing…
- Playa Avellanas: Often cited as one of the top ten beaches in Central America, Playa Avellanas is home to “little Hawaii,” a world-class surf swell with waves that can eclipse 18 feetgiven the right conditions. What’s more, this little slice of paradise also promises soft sands, exotic shells, and brilliant turquoise waters.
- Playa Langosta: When you close your eyes and imagine a beach paradise, you’re envisioning Playa Langosta. Ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Latin America tree-lined sands, Playa Langosta offers lava rock tide pools, soft sand, and roaring surf, all wrapped up in a “Blue Flag” (Costa Rica’s certification for eco sensitivity).
- Playa Mansita: If you’re looking for a quiet respite, Playa Mansita’s white sands, scenic landscapes, and gentle waves is one of our guests’ favorite places to relax. At low tide, be sure to explore the rocky outcroppings – and all the interesting wildlife that make their home there.

Even better, our concierge services are always free. So, why wait? Get in touch and let’s get started!

There’s so much to see, do, and experience in Costa Rica that the biggest planning challenge can be narrowing down your options. Nowhere is this quite so evident than when you’re selecting the beaches in Guanacaste that you’d like to visit.
Thanks to Costa Rica’s volcanic origins, the country’s 800 miles of coastline does not unroll as a single strip of sand. Instead, Mother Nature treats us to cliffs and hills and outcroppings – all scenic, all stopgaps between one beach and the next. The result is a string of many hundreds of small beaches, some measuring just a few hundred yards and others stretching for miles.
You’ll have to choose which of these beaches in Guanacaste you’d like to visit. To help, we’ve rounded up a dozen of our favorites. From south to north:
Playa Lagartillo
Shh, don’t tell, but Playa Largartillo is an underhyped king of the coast! Just a few minutes from Hacienda Pinilla (you can walk from Avellanas; just head south!), this secluded beach is considered crowded when there are more than just a few people here. And that means you have a decent shot at being one of the only people on the beach. There’s joy in just that!
But it’s more than that. Because Playa Lagartillo is home to soft, cinnamon-hued sands that melt into deep blue waters. The coast is lined with shade trees, hermit crabs scuttle here and there, and the rocky coast reveals itself for discovery, come low tide.
Playa Avellanas

Located right here in Hacienda Pinilla, home to our spectacular Beach Club, and widely considered one of the best beaches in Central America, Playa Avellanas is a popular choice for both surfers and beach lovers.
When you think Avellanas, think surf swells first. That is, after all, the beach’s claim to fame: waves that climb as tall as 18 feet (during the best conditions) and that, even on calmer days, almost never fail to churn up a challenge. All that promised, this lovely beach is also a bastion for sandy strolls, seafoam frolicking, and lounging beneath the sand-side shade.
Playa Mansita
The third and quietest beach at Hacienda Pinilla, Playa Mansita offers the community a tranquil spot for relaxation, any time of day. Take a stroll. Pull up a chair. Dig your toes into the sand. And just enjoy the view.
Come low tide, though, you’ll witness Playa Mansita’s claim to fame: the ocean floor’s porous rocks reveal themselves, forming tide pools and ocean paths that make you feel like you’re walking on water. Head out and look down to observe an entire ocean world – crabs, fish, and more – swimming in these sun-splashed pools.
Playa Langosta

Hacienda Pinilla’s spectacular beaches include Langosta, Mansita, and Avellanas.
Another of Hacienda Pinilla’s famous trio of beaches, Playa Langosta is perhaps the most well-known. That’s because this stretch of white sands, rocky outcroppings, and consistent surf extends from just south of Tamarindo, through the Playa Langosta community, and down into the stronghold of Hacienda Pinilla.
And oh, what an addition to our shores! Home to laid-back beach vibes, Playa Langosta is a tree-lined and scenic spot where towering Guanacaste trees cozy up to the coast and tide pools emerge when the weaves ebb. It’s also here that every night, the ideal conditions seem to converge to create breathtaking, heart-pounding sunsets. This is the kind of place that invented “a day at the beach.”
Playa Tamarindo
The beach that gave a place its name! Famous Playa Tamarindo, also known as Tamarindo Beach, literally put our region on the map. Why? Well, for its world-famous surf!
For here, cozied up to pillowed white sands and a tree-lined coast, Playa Tamarindo drops some serious waves – that’s everything from baby to gargantuan – onto its coastline. As it stretches for a couple of miles, there’s quite a lot of coastline to cover. And that means that there are so many slivers of scenic paradise to explore: if one wave is too big and one wave is too small, like Goldilocks, you’ll eventually find your sweet spot.
Note: A few stretches of Tamarindo Beach are also safe for swimming. The rule of thumb is to look for where lots of swimmers are and always ask a local surfer about the day’s conditions!
Playa Grande

If you go to Playa Tamarindo, then you should go to Playa Grande. Because here, at the north end, just an estuary separates Tamarindo from Playa Grande. It’s a $1, 1-minute ride and it is so worth it. (And do take the estuary ferry, or drive, as the estuary and river are home to crocodiles.)
Once you reach the other side, Playa Grande unfolds over Las Baulas National Marine Park, one of the world’s most important leatherback sea turtle nesting sites. (A big deal, given that these sea giants are endangered.) This protected beach is also a favorite for beach-goers, who stroll its expansive coast, sunbathe, surf-watch, and enjoy a day on the sand.
Playa Ventanas
Sitting just north of Playa Grande and well ensconced within Las Baulas National Marine Park (so named for the leatherback sea turtles that nest here), Playa Ventanas offers a “window” (= ventana) toward Tamarindo and into some of our area’s most postcard-perfect scenery. (Although don’t confuse this Playa Ventanas for the Playa Ventanas of the southern Pacific; that one’s famed for its caves.)
Our Playa Ventanas treats you to soft, almost-white sands, tide pools, and sweeping views that extend down the coast. What’s more, thanks to its sheltered position, Playa Ventanas is also an excellent swimming beach (always check conditions, though!). And, as it’s also part of the national marine park, this special spot welcomes a host of wildlife, from the aforementioned leatherbacks to crabs, monkeys, and waterbirds.
Playa Carbón
When you’re in the mood for something a little different – something a little eye-catching – then we highly recommend a trek to Playa Carbón, or Charcoal Beach. Instead of Costa Rica’s typical sand-color trio (white, cinnamon, and pink), here you’ll find something entirely different.
Just a short and secluded stroll from Playa Ventanas (depending on the day, you may be one of the few on the beach!), you’ll come upon this black-sand beach, streaked by only the occasional flash of pure white. If you’re wondering what kind of alchemy has unrolled at your feet, know this: Playa Carbón’s vivid and unique coloring comes courtesy of Costa Rica’s volcanic origins, which have left deposits of magnetic iron oxide offshore. As it washes in, voilà!
Playa Piratas
Arrr, mateys! This is the beach you’ve been looking for. Known as Bahía de los Piratas, or Pirate’s Cove, Playa Piratas is little known but well deserving of a visit. Because, while you may not find pirates on these sands, you will find sheltered swimming waters, cinnamon sands, and coastal islands that scatter your view.
Even better, this sweet little beach is often deserted (or nearly so). On a good day, you’ll have its entire length and all its gentle waters to splash, play, and enjoy for yourself.
Playa Minas
If we tell you a secret, will you keep it? Here goes: Though you won’t find it on your GPS, Playa Minas is one of the best beaches in Guanacaste: sun-kissed sand, soft coastline, beautiful views, and sea breezes make it so!
But, you’ll have to know how to get there. And here’s the secret: On maps, this beauty is named Playa Zapotillal. What’s more, you’ll need (or at least, strongly desire) a 4×4 or high-clearance car rental to take you down the bumpy road. But when you get there, you’ll be rewarded by a could-be-private, spectacular corner of Costa Rica that few tourists rarely see. Note that Playa Minas has rough surf, so plan to stroll, not swim!
Playa Conchal

Though it’s about a 45-minute drive from Hacienda Pinilla, we can’t create a list of the best beaches in Guanacaste without mentioning Playa Conchal, perhaps the most famous beach in Costa Rica.
If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, know this: Playa Conchal glows pink in the sunlight, thanks to the millions of crushed seashells that cover its coast. Though the effect is a little more rosé than a rose bouquet, and while the panorama changes depending on the sun, it’s always to gorgeous effect. Add to that calm swimming waters and decent snorkeling conditions, and it’s easy to see why this is such a popular beach.
Sugar Beach
Its Spanish name is Playa Pan de Azúcar, or Sugarloaf Beach, but most call it just “Sugar Beach.” Any way you slice it, though, this strip of sand offers a sweet spot to beat the heat and spend some quality time with your toes buried in the sand.
As you can access Sugar Beach via the trail from Playa Prieta, you’ll find that this is one of the least traveled beaches in Guanacaste. And that means that, on any given day, you may find yourself alone with the Pacific. That can be a wonderful thing, when it’s accompanied by sugar-soft sands and gorgeous scenery, especially as viewed from Mirador Playa Prieta, the scenic viewpoint from the trail.
Casa Leon
8 Beds | 8 Baths | 16 Guests

Just steps to the beach and Hacienda Pinilla’s luxury Beach Club, Casa Leon is a hidden treasure that promises a world of extraordinary promise and unfettered joy.
A perfect home for large families, groups, and friends traveling together, this special villa offers all the luxury amenities you’d expect: a private pool, gourmet kitchen, expansive interiors, indoor-outdoor living, and walls of glass.
Pair that with daily breakfast preparation and Hacienda Pinilla’s arguably best location – literal steps to the sand and, from there, a 60-yard stroll to the Hacienda Pinilla Beach Club – and it’s easy to see why Casa Leon is an easy favorite for beach lovers, surfers, and anyone who loves to walk the beach at sunset.

It doesn’t matter if you’re here for a week or a year: Somehow, when it comes to the country’s sights and wonders, you’ll always be a little short on time. They’re that numerous, that must-visit, that breathtaking. And these national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica are absolutely part of the mix.
And so, as you struggle to whittle down your vacation list, we thought we’d throw a few of our favorite national parks into the mix. Bear in mind, that there are more to visit, even in our province alone. And, if you’ve already visited our top five, then get in touch and we’ll fill you in on our next five picks!
And now, in alphabetical order:
Las Baulas National Marine Park
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 25 kms / 15.5 miles

Just a short drive from Hacienda Pinilla, you’ll find one of the most incredible national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica: Las Baulas, named for the endangered leatherback turtles that nest and hatch on its shores. (Note that this park is often mistranslated as Marino Las Baulas National Park but it’s really Las Baulas, or Leatherbacks National Marine Park.)
Sprawling an expansive 43,240+ acres, Las Baulas features just 1,900 land acres. And that’s because the majority of the park’s protected acreage reside in the Pacific Ocean. Because here, turtles gather in what is one of the world’s largest leatherback nesting sites. This is made all the more important by the fact that leatherback sea turtles are endangered, their world populations declining. Las Baulas is an important piece of the planet’s leatherback conservation efforts.
That said, populations are still declining. And that means that leatherback sightings are not a given – not even during nesting season. Your best bet is to check in with concierge Cris, who can advise you on whether leatherbacks are currently (or expected to be) nesting during your visit. Not the right time? Don’t worry; you can also visit nesting olive ridley turtles at nearby Ostional!
Barra Honda National Park
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 71 kms / 44 miles
Here’s one you won’t find listed on many lists – but we think it should be! Because, if you’re looking to step off the beaten path and do something that few rarely do, then Barra Honda National Park should definitely find itself in the mix.
Because here, Costa Rica’s wonders lie beneath the surface, in subterranean caves that promise spelunking, stalactites and stalagmites, and some of the country’s rarest natural experiences. And it’s all courtesy of Mother Nature who, 70 million years ago, began knocking at tectonic plates to send ancient coral reefs and soft limestone surging to toward the sky.
Over the millennia, other forces took over. Rain and erosion chipped away at Mother Nature’s formations. Weather created ideal conditions to build biodiversity into these incredible caves. And the forests above matured and grew. Today, not even half the caves (current count: 19 of 42) have been explored – and yet, they’ve already revealed the secrets of their formations, underground wildlife, fossils, and pre-Columbian artifacts.
If you want to explore Barra Honda safely, you’ll need to book a guided cavern tour. A seasoned guide will take you into the park’s famous triplets: Terciopelo (Fer de Lance), Santa Ana, and Trap caverns.
Palo Verde National Park
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 95 kms / 59 miles

When it comes to Costa Rica birdwatching, there’s a lot of emphasis placed on Monteverde, San Gerardo de Dota, and a handful of other locations. And yet, one of the country’s most lauded, most incredible, and most astounding birdwatching destinations is right here, at one of the best national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
Welcome to Palo Verde National Park, a veritable birdwatching paradise. Yes, even amongst Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity and 900+ resident and migratory bird species. Because here, Palo Verde’s 45,500 land and water acres serve as a biologically critical wetland sanctuary: 15 diverse habitats that cross from river to evergreen forest, marshes to salt ponds, mangroves to pastureland.
And all this? Well, it hosts up to 250,000 birds at one time and the largest populations of waterfowl and shorebirds in Central America. In other words, that birdwatching paradise we promised. And yet, it’s not just birds you’ll spot; Palo Verde is also home to a variety of reptile and mammal species, from armadillos and howler monkeys to crocodiles and Costa Rica’s largest jaguarundi populations (they’re a small wildcat).
Rincón de la Vieja National Park
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 115 kms / 72 miles

You’ll find no round-up of Guanacaste national parks that doesn’t include Rincón de la Vieja National Park. That’s because this is one of the best, if not the best national park in the country. Yeah, we said it. And we meant it, because this national park is a true showstopper: Home to an active volcano, long tradition, and striking sights, Rincón de la Vieja National Park and its eponymous volcano promise thrills of a natural variety.
Let’s begin with its origin, which dates back to a pre-Columbian princess whose father disapproved so heartily of her lover that he threw him into the volcano. With anger and heartbreak, the princess retreated to the mountaintop where she grew to be the “old woman” (“la vieja”) with healing powers – healing powers that evolved into the volcano’s mineral-rich, healing hot springs and volcanic mud.
Today, many centuries later, many still visit la vieja’s corner in search of restorative soaks. But well recommend you also visit for its Las Pailas trail, which is one of our hands-down favorites in the country. That’s because it leads past waterfalls and through tropical dry forest, into scrubby moonscape and by flowing rivers, on the way to bubbling mudpots, volcanic vents, mini-volcanoes, boiling hot springs (look but don’t touch!), steaming fumaroles, and more.
Not enough adrenaline to scratch the adventure itch? If the park’s craters (there are nine!) are open – availability is dependent on volcanic activity and, thus, safety – you can also take the hike to the main crater. On a clear day, you can see both the Pacific and Nicaragua!
Guanacaste National Park
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 126 kms / 78 miles
Though this park carries our province’s name, you won’t find it atop every list of national parks. That’s because it’s often side-stepped in favorite of neighboring Santa Rosa National Park, home to famous Costa Rican battles, triumphs, and history. And, while we love Santa Rosa, we deeply appreciate the story that Guanacaste National Park can tell.
Because this park was founded in 1989 both as a habitat bridge and a gesture of hope – as proof that you can literally “grow a national park.” The heart and brainchild of Dr. Daniel Janzen, an evolutionary ecologist and conservationist, this park emerged from what was once flagging pastureland. With a plan to help struggling cattle ranchers, Dr. Janzen purchase the land and began to rebuild this biological corridor.
Today, Guanacaste National Park is one of our top national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica and a critical big cat habitat and important roaming ground for these massive felines, many of which are endangered in this range. Over the years, it has also become an important ecosystem for resident and migratory bird species, as well as proof that reforestation and conservation efforts not only work, but also have a vital impact on their land and communities.

As we head into August, glorious rains and their many perks are definitely upon us. And boy, do we love the Costa Rica green season!
Ask anyone who lives or spends significant time in Costa Rica, and you’ll soon learn that the green season – also known as the rainy season or wet season (May-November) – is often a favorite. We know, the guidebooks all seem to indicate that the dry season (December-April) is the best season to visit Costa Rica and that only those travelers who can’t visit during the dry season should choose the rainy season.
We beg to differ. Because the rainy season is better known as the Costa Rica green season. Key word: Green. As in, emerald landscapes and verdant panoramas, vibrant forests and flora abloom with life. This is the season of nature’s abundance and scenic glory, of roaring waterfalls and frothing whitewater rivers.
It’s also host to the best prices of the year and the fewest crowds, not to mention a handful of other perks that have us recommending green season travel over and over and over again.
Perk #1: It’s the Most Beautiful Time of Year

Green, green everywhere! The Costa Rica green season is so named for a reason…
This is one perk that could almost be considered objective: There is no time more beautiful in Costa Rica than after the rains have started. Because the Costa Rica green season unrolls into every shade, hue, and color of green – from the gentlest lime to the deepest beryl. It’s truly a sight to behold.
Granted, the all-sun, all-the-time weather of the dry season has its appeal. But, the strong sun can also be punishing to water-conserving Costa Rica. By contrast, the wet season’s regular showers (which typically last 5-90 minutes a day, see perk #3, below) return Costa Rica’s landscapes to their fertile glory.
All those gorgeous Costa Rica photos you’ve obsessed over online? You know, the ones that feature huge swaths of green forest cozied up to golden sands and blue Pacific? They’re almost surely taken during the green season. The paradise you hold in your mind’s eye is happening right now!
Perk #2: There Are Few Crowds
If you’re the kind of traveler who doesn’t care to share your every experience with a few dozen strangers, then you’ll love the relatively few crowds that the rainy season attracts. (See above, re: wayward advice.)
For seven long and languid months, you have a chance to experience a different side of Costa Rica. A Costa Rica where forest trails are untraveled and beaches are nearly secluded. Where your guides can devote their full attention to your group and everyone seems to have a little more time for a smile, an explanation, and an afternoon cafecito (coffee).
By choosing to travel now, you choose to be one of a few rather than a face in the crowd. We let you choose which one you prefer!
Stay Here: Casa Serena
5 Beds | 5 Baths | 10 Guests
Sparing no luxury and overlooking no touch of comfort, Casa Serena welcomes you to Costa Rica green season travel and labyrinthine indoor-outdoor living for an exclusive selection of just 10 guests.
Here, you’ll experience and relish every exquisite detail of beachfront luxury: With the sand between your toes and the Pacific at your feet, you’ll explore your home-away-from-home. Spend time at the custom infinity pool, which wraps itself around a tree. Indulge in the in-home spa room. Get a workout in at the fully equipped gym.
And then, whip up something fabulous in your chef-ready gourmet kitchen, well equipped for everything from healthy meals to indulgent treats. Take morning, afternoon, and evening strolls on the beach. (Be sure to go out when the stars are out. It’s otherworldly!) And spend your days on your ocean-breezy, shaded terraces. Welcome to paradise!

Perk #3: The Guanacaste Rainy Season Isn’t That Rainy
While most experts tend to recommend our high and dry months (December through April), the rainy season months (May through November) in Guanacaste, where Hacienda Pinilla is located, aren’t that rainy.
To begin, Guanacaste is the driest province in Costa Rica, which predisposes us to milder rainy seasons. That means that torrential rain is rare and, when it happens, it typically lasts for a few minutes. And life could be worse than a few minutes in a tropical rainstorm!
What’s more, even during the rainiest months of September and October, the Hacienda Pinilla will rarely experience more than a couple of hours of rain. Of course, we are talking unpredictable weather and there are always outliers…
That said, a typical day during the Costa Rica green season wakes to gorgeous skies and bright sun. By lunchtime, you may see some clouds rolling in. In the early afternoon, it’ll likely rain – anywhere from 5 to 90 minutes (typically) – and by early evening, the storm has rolled out and a brilliant sunset sits on the horizon.
If you’re lucky, you may even experience the majesty of a tropical thunderstorm during your visit. There’s nothing like sitting on your private pool terrace as you watch the clouds descend and lightning strike!
Stay Here: Casa Diana

For here, you’ll find a celebration of everything that vacation should be: a private infinity pool and double living rooms, spacious sun-splashed terraces and two master suites, a gourmet kitchen and a not-oft-found wine cellar.

Perk #4: The Prices Are Lower

See more, do more, travel more, thanks to the lower prices during Costa Rica’s low season
If the Costa Rica green season hasn’t yet won you over, then consider that it offers the lowest prices of the year.
It all comes down to supply and demand: Because so many choose to travel during the dry season, demand goes up. By contrast, the shoulder season (May, June, and November) and the rainy season (July-October) experience lower prices across the board: From airfare and Hacienda Pinilla vacation homes to tours and activities, prices drop.
That offers its own opportunities. Whether you want to lower your total costs or funnel your funds into a luxury home that would be out of your budget during the high season, then the rainy season grants you leeway. It lets you live a little. Or live a little bit large. You choose!
Perk #5: Access to Hacienda Pinilla’s World-Class Amenities

The par-72, 7,200-yard Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course was designed by renowned architect Mike Young.
While some areas of Costa Rica close down or reduce their tourist services during the green season, Hacienda Pinilla’s resort amenities are available year-round. Only, there are fewer people to share them with during the green season!
Retreat to the relative tranquility of the Hacienda Pinilla Beach Club, where you can relax at the oceanfront resort pool and restaurant. Avail yourself of the par-72 Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course, which welcomes you to up to 7,200 yards of play. Stop by the tennis courts for a friendly match or lesson with a pro. Bike or hike the community’s over 45 kms (28 miles) of trails. Surf our epic waves and get to know Hacienda Pinilla’s three beautiful beaches.
The community, the province, and the country are yours to explore. Revel in the beauty, the variety, and the almost-secrets of the rainy season. We think you’ll be glad you did!

Costa Rica is a magical land of mountain rivers, lush gorges, and tumbling elevations – the perfect trifecta for carving out ideal waterfall conditions. Our landscapes are riddled with these natural wonders and it would be impossible to mention them all. But we can clue you in to a few of our favorite Guanacaste waterfalls.
And by a few, we mean 12 – plus an add-on that we think you’ll love! All, within a daytrip of Hacienda Pinilla. Welcome to paradise!
Guanacaste Waterfalls Near Rincón de la Vieja National Park
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla to Las Pailas Sector: 67 miles (108 kms) | 2 hours, 10 minutes
We’ve grouped the following waterfalls together (and listed in alphabetical order), as they are all located within or just outside Rincón de la Vieja National Park. Together, they would make a perfect overnight or weekend getaway!

Rincón de la Vieja National Park is home to several of our favorite Guanacaste waterfalls
La Cangreja Waterfall
Located within the protected confines of Rincón de la Vieja National Park, La Cangreja Waterfall requires a bit of commitment: The hike is 3 miles (5 kilometers), one way, but oh, are they worth it!
As you wend your way through the forest’s changing terrain, you’ll be treated to an array of flora and fauna, from iguanas and coatis to 300 bird species and howler, white-faced capuchin, and spider monkeys. And finally, La Cangreja, a 130-foot (40-meter) cascade that pours itself over a cliff and into a deep turquoise pool below. Note that visitors are not permitted to swim at La Cangreja (no matter what photos you see online).
Add On: Escondido Waterfall
While we wouldn’t term Escondido Waterfall as one of the ultimate “best” Guanacaste waterfalls, we would recommend a visit if you’re in the area! And if you’re at La Cangreja and have the stamina and desire, this is a wonderful addition to your hike. (It’s just a short fork off the La Cangreja hiking trail.)
It’ll add an additional 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) to your total 6-mile (10-kilometer) hike. But at Escondido – literally, the hidden falls – you’ll find that you are almost guaranteed to be the only one in sight. This is, undoubtedly, one of Costa Rica’s hidden secrets and a lovely added sight for waterfall chasers.
Las Chorreras Waterfall

Located at Hacienda Guachipelin, just outside Rincón de la Vieja National Park, Las Chorreras promises a scenic canyon, blue waters, and a refreshing swimming hole.
You’ll start with a 30-minute, 1.25-mile light hike to Las Chorreras – a natural paradise of lush trees and expertly carved rock, courtesy of Mother Nature. The water-smoothed canyon creates a path for the twin falls of Las Chorreras (literally, the “outpourings”). Below lies a freshwater pool, tinted slightly blue and beckoning you to cool off with a quick dip.
La Estacional
La Estacional Waterfall, or the “seasonal” waterfall, is located along the Las Pailas sector trail of Rincón de la Vieja National Park. As its name suggests, it is seasonal – your best chance of spotting the falls occurs between June and December – but it’s a lovely sight if you’re here for it!
In addition to the tumbling waters, you’ll enjoy spotting the sky-blue pool below (swimming not permitted), as well as Las Pailas incredible attractions, which extend to volcanic fumaroles, hot springs, and bubbling mud pots.
La Oropéndola Waterfall
Located near the Las Pailas entrance (our favorite!) to Rincón de la Vieja National Park, La Oropéndola emerges from ethereal canyon like a mermaid from water: You don’t know she’s there, almost until she has revealed herself.
It all comes down to the cascade’s positioning: Secreted into a tall and rocky river gorge, tucked behind a corner, you won’t see La Oropéndola until suddenly, you do. And it’s a spectacular sight, as the falls plunge an impressive 82 feet (25 meters) from the Río Blanco (White River) into a sparkling, often translucent turquoise pool below. Enjoy your swim!
La Victoria Waterfall
At La Oropéndola, we had the Río Blanco (White River); at La Victoria, we have the Río Negro (Black River). And yet, the water is neither white nor black, at either!
La Victoria Waterfall, also located near Rincón de la Vieja National Park, tumbles 115 feet (35 meters) into the Río Negro. It’s not only a breathtaking spectacle but an opportunity for a swim: La Victoria’s cool river-fed pool is safe for swimming, offering a 360-degree view to the surrounding dry forest and scenic trails. You can also cool off beneath the cascade; talk about a photo op!
Other Guanacaste Waterfalls

Llanos de Cortés Waterfall is at once one of the most beautiful and most accessible waterfalls in Guanacaste
Now, we’ll transition to the other waterfalls throughout our province. This list is by no means comprehensive but we do think we’ve included many of the best and favorite waterfalls in Guanacaste, Costa Rica!
In alphabetical order:
Belen Waterfall
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 48 miles (77 kms) | 1 hour, 30 minutes
A hidden gem among Guanacaste waterfalls, Belen Waterfall promises a short hike through the trees and a scenic spot to spend a few hours.
The waterfall’s 15-foot (4-meter) drop falls into a deep pool – diving not recommended – but the real appeal is in the smooth lounging rocks and multi-level pools that surround the cascade. Pack a picnic!
Stay Here: Casa Nimbu

La Leona Waterfall
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 61 miles (98 kms) | 1 hour, 45 minutes
When you first see the Leona waterfall, you’ll think that it’s a man-made attraction. It’s that perfect, that otherworldly, that beautiful. But La Leona is, indeed, naturally made—and we think it’s one of mother nature’s most breathtaking creations!
Indeed, this waterfall is one of the most exciting in Costa Rica, if not the world. Located within a cave and on the other side of an exhilarating, adrenaline-soaked, three-hour hike – you’ll have to wade through waist-high water to arrive! – La Leona Is an experience and an adventure unto itself. And, yes, after that waist-high waiting, you’ll be rewarded with not only a striking photo op, but also an invitation to swim in the waterfall’s cave-ensconced swimming hole.
La Piedra del Indio Waterfall
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 103 miles (165 kms) | 3 hours
If you’re looking for an incredible, how-is-it-possibly-still-a-secret kind of place, then welcome to La Piedra del Indio Waterfall (Indian’s Rock).
Named for the pre-Columbian figures that festoon a large rock near the waterfall, this gorgeous cascade plunges 260 feet (79.25 meters) down water-worn rock face and into a cool, river-fed swimming hole. And getting there is half the fun! You can walk or horseback ride and, along the way, you may just be lucking enough to spot wildlife including toucans, anteaters, monkeys, sloths, and more!
Land of Senses Waterfalls
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 89 miles (143 kms) | 3 hours
We’ll let you in on a little-known secret in Guanacaste waterfalls: Sensoria (the Land of Senses) is home to some of our most spectacular cascades, which sit surrounded by mid-altitude tropical rainforest, blue waterfall pools, and soul-enriching magic.
It all begins on a 3.73-mile (6-kilometer) hike through the private park’s trails. As you pass by centenarian trees and through lush rainforest, you’ll feel awe creep in. And then, amidst the volcano-fed hot springs and tropical setting, the landscape parts to reveal the park’s four magical waterfalls: Buenos Aires Waterfall, Aguilar Waterfall, Jícara Waterfall, and Danta Waterfall. Aguilar Waterfall is a particular favorite, as the water’s silicon content paints the river stones white and creates fortuitous light refraction that makes the water glow fluorescent blue!
Note: Sensoria is technically in the Rincón de la Vieja National Park area but we’ve chosen to keep it separate, as it’s a two-hour drive from the park’s Las Pailas sector, where our grouped waterfalls are located.
Llanos de Cortés Waterfall
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 67 miles (107 kms) | 1 hour, 50 minutes
Llanos de Cortés is one of those sights so stunning, so jaw-dropping, so raw and inspiring that you think they’d be secreted deep into a jungle, hours from the closes trailhead. And yet, this iconic cascade is located between Liberia and Bagaces, about two hours from Hacienda Pinilla.
One of our most easy-to-hike waterfalls, Llanos de Cortés could also be considered one of the most beautiful in Costa Rica. As stunning as it is huge – the waterfall itself measures 50 feet wide by 12 feet tall! – Llanos de Cortés flows year-round, providing a wonderful oasis, even at the height of our dry season. (Although note that, by March/April, the falls are more gentle flow rather than roaring torrent.)
The large, clean, and often translucent pool beneath offers the perfect spot for a swim. And pack a picnic because Llanos de Cortés even has its own small, sandy beach.

Rio Celeste Waterfall
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 109 miles (176 kms) | 3 hours
Unequivocally one of Costa Rica’s most recognizable and photographed waterfalls, the stunning and startling Río Celeste Waterfall is beautiful enough to qualify as a wonder of the world.
Known for its striking blue waters, the Celestial River Waterfall promises ethereal blue hues that are not a trick of the light: scoop some up in your hand, and that water is still blue! It all comes down to a chemical reaction between colloidal silica and copper sulfate in the water, and sulfur from the active Tenorio Volcano and its national park, where the waterfall is located.
Scientific explanation or no, the sight is one you will never forget. And that’s why so many visitors make their way to this, the most famous of Guanacaste waterfalls. The park’s trails are challenging but well maintained; you’ll have some elevation gains (and an odd 150 stairs) to climb but when you finally make it, it’s worth it!
Note that you cannot swim in the Celeste Waterfall pool but if you’re itching for a blue-water photo op, check out our other baby-blue waterfall pools in this post. Many are safe and swimmable!
Viento Fresco Waterfalls
Distance from Hacienda Pinilla: 102 miles (164 kms) | 2 hours, 45 minutes
Named for the fresh breezes that whisper through the forest, Viento Fresco Waterfalls are one of those off-the-beaten-path Guanacaste waterfalls that only those in-the-know know to visit. And now, you know!
Beneath the shade of the forest’s canopy, groomed trails lead you to the delights and wonder of the park’s five awe-inspiring waterfalls, which include Serena Waterfall (102 feet / 31 meters), Hidden Waterfall (66 feet / 20 meters) and its two caves, Rainbow Waterfall (247 feet / 75 meters), Slide Waterfall (312 feet / 95 meters), and the Rock Waterfall (49 feet / 15 meters).

We admit it: We’re enthusiastic foodies! And so, we consider it our job (and it’s such a hard job…) to sample and savor our way through our surrounding Playa Avellanas restaurants, located both in and out of Hacienda Pinilla.
This is by no means a comprehensive guide (coming soon?), but here are 11 of our current favorites, some new and some mainstays. As we say in Costa Rica, ¡provecho!
La Esquina de Avellanas
Location: Playa Avellanas
Cuisine: Various (It’s an outdoor food court)
Phone: (+506) 8340-8237 or (+506) 8829-2598
Brand new to the Playa Avellanas restaurants scene, La Esquina de Avellanas (“the Corner at Avellanas”) is a collection of local shops and restaurants, gathered into one supremely welcoming and cozy locale. This is the kind of place you go, when you want to feel the local vibe and experience something a little different – or when you can’t agree on one restaurant, because you all want something different. You can all get something different, at La Esquina!
La Esquina currently hosts several restaurants, including Koru, a “magical” gelato shop that summons some sort of alchemy to craft lactose-free gelato (similar to ice cream, but even creamier!) that will send your tastebuds into the stratosphere. Another favorite is Pokeviche, where you’ll find some of the most delicious (and photogenic) poke bowls, crafted from ultra-fresh ingredients. Swing on by La Esquina and see what new favorites you order up!

Located on Costa Rica’s Gold Coast, lined by pristine beaches, and home to some of the best community amenities in the country, Hacienda Pinilla, Costa Rica is an unequaled 5-star experience.
But what does that mean? And what does it require of your vacation rental company? Here’s what you should know – and expect – from your Hacienda Pinilla vacation experience:
Quality of Service

True luxury resides in quality of service – in attention to detail, unwavering insistence on high standards, and dedication to you, our guests.
In an era when anyone can buy extravagance, true luxury comes down to superior service. And that begins with your Hacienda Pinilla, Costa Rica vacation rental company – your contact and entrée to this exclusive oceanfront community.
At Luxury Villas Pinilla, we hold ourselves to the highest standards. And while everyone says that, we follow through: We have great communication. We check in and check up. We not only attend to your requests, but offer a full range of vacation amenities, services, and options, from private chefs and in-villa spa services to private tours and sailboat charters. All you need do is ask.
Hand-Curated Vacation Rentals
A home list too short or too long is a warning sign at any vacation rental company: They are either unestablished (or don’t have a strong reputation) or they do maintain strict standards for the homes they represent.
At Luxury Villas Pinilla, we hand-curate our list of available rental homes, choosing only those that offer best-in-class accommodations and amenities for their price range. This means that we represent the full gamut of offerings within Hacienda Pinilla, Costa Rica, while curating a list of the best options – from cozy two-bedroom condos to almost palatial nine-bedroom villas, from upscale homes to all-out luxury rentals with full staffs – to match our guests’ exacting standards and vacation needs.

Dedicated and Complimentary Concierge Services
Complimentary, expert concierge services are a keystone of our 5-star service promise at Luxury Villas Pinilla.
Our friendly concierge is an open book – a guidebook, specifically. She knows Costa Rica and Hacienda Pinilla intimately but, even more importantly, she keeps completely current with all the options.
She stays in touch with private chefs (and only works with those who meet our high standards). She regularly checks in with Sailboat A, Sailboat B, and Sailboat C, to understand what sets each apart, meet their captains and deck crew, and confirm safety protocols. She knows which tours have the savviest naturalist guides, the best lunch stops, and the best rapport with kids.
And she gets to know you this well, too. Because, that’s her true job: to understand you, your needs, and your wish list – and then, to map them to Hacienda Pinilla and Tamarindo’s offerings. Along the way, she’ll also work behind the scenes to avoid problems, add special touches, and ensure that this vacation is everything you expect.
Almost more importantly, once you’re here, you’ll have an in-country advocate, whenever you need her. Locked yourself out? Lost in your rental car? Forgot your passport on a tour? We’re here to help, always.
